Man surrenders, bus standoff ends
Tribune staff reports
Published August 16, 2004, 1:52 PM CDT
A man who allegedly barricaded himself inside what appeared to be a converted school bus and held police at bay for several hours in Rolling Meadows surrendered this afternoon after tactical officers fired concussive grenades into the vehicle.
The standoff ended shortly after 1 p.m. after officers fired the grenades -- designed to stun, not injure -- into the bus, and the man came out and gave himself up. He was taken into police custody.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
Witnesses said the drama began this morning when the man allegedly crashed his bus into a nearby home, then drove off and pulled over along Meacham Road north of Algonquin Road.
An officer approached the bus, WGN-Ch. 9 reported. The man allegedly refused to come out, and the standoff ensued.
Dozens of police officers, some in special weapons and tactics gear, closed Meacham between Algonquin and Plum Grove Roads and surrounded the vehicle. It was not immediately known if the man was armed or if anyone else was on the bus.
Neighbors told WGN they knew the man only as "Larry," an individual who carried around a cross and shouted anti-government slogans. He apparently lived in the bus, which was painted gray and had red, white and blue flags in the windows and the lettering "Magnified Spirit" on its side.
"The only thing we know about Larry is that he has needs, and we tried to reach out to him," Rev. Darryl Rice of Harvest Bible Fellowship, 800 Rohlwing Rd., Rolling Meadows, told WGN.
The man had parked his bus in the church's parking lot for about two weeks. He resisted invitations to come into the church, Rice said.
"We have talked with him and invited him to come to our church, but that's about as much as we know," Rice said. "It's pretty clear he had some issues."

pic from the Herald online:
A man who barricaded himself in an old school bus and held police from several Northwest Suburban departments at bay for several hours surrendered this afternoon.
The standoff ended shortly after 1 p.m. after officers fired "flash-bangs" into the bus. The devices, which make a loud noise followed by a blinding light, are used to confuse, not injure, people.
The incident started this morning when the man, identified by family members as Larry Soyka, got into an argument with his parents. Ed Soyka, who lives at 109 Dahlia, said his son left the house after the argument this morning. Instead of pulling out of the driveway, Larry Soyka backed into the house, his father said.
Larry Soyka drove the bus, painted gray with the word "peace" on the back, to the International Village Apartment Complex in Rolling Meadows. Police surrounded the bus there. They blocked off the area near Meacham and Algonquin roads and parts of the apartment complex.
No one was injured in the incident. Larry Soyka was taken into police custody.
