Help me choose a camera...

Long story short, I really like taking nice photographs, and I think I need a better camera in order to learn better...
I currently have a Canon PowerShot s 500 Digital Elph 5.0 MP

I don't have a huge budget, but do want a camera that's a little better and can capture better photos...

I'm looking to replace it with 1 of these
EOS digital rebel 8.0 MP
8.0MP
Canon PowerShot 6.0MP

Currently I'm leaning toward the PowerShot since it's much cheaper than the SLR, but if the SLR is far superior to the PowerShot, then I'll highly consider it

Please give me some advice...

Thanks,
-Ivan

The S3 is the camera that I currently have and if it had a vagina, I would make love to it. That's how awesome it is. HIGHLY recommend it. BUT... keep looking too... you never know what else you can find.

I love digital SLR's....GREAT CAMERA!!!! I think it was worth the money, however it does pinch the pockets pretty deeply.

I have a Nikon D80...and spent a pretty penny on it. However. I love the way the pictures come out and with all SLR's you can use various lenses and filters for far superior pictures.

I'm really happy with my rebel xt. If I ever get a new camera, it'll almost definitely be a canon SLR.

Happy with my Nikon D50, was happy with my Nikon N65 too Was an easy transfer from my film to digital slr, didnt have to buy lenses or anything since I already had it all, knew how to operate the nikon easily already too. I did want to go canon but since I had all the equipment I stuck with them.

I may go Canon next time, we'll see. Won't be for a couple of years though.

SLR is the way to go. But you must be willing to learn more about cameras. Although there is an Auto mode. You'll definitely find that learning your way around the settings of an SLR will bring out the most creative aspect out of your photography. Also the lens interchangability helps, but lenses/external flashes aren't all that cheap.
Definitely nice to have a point & shoot powershot camera too, you don't want to bring an SLR everywhere you go. The new SD700 IS & SD800 IS are nice because they have the Image Stabilizer function, so all of us nicotine and caffiene riddled people can take some decent shots.
S3 IS is a nice camera, but I'd only make love to the 1d Mark III. I mean DAMN!!!

Sorry bub... never owned an SLR so I can't compare the two. Keep in mind that the S3 is a point-and-shoot and pics wont come out as good as SLR but they'll still be pretty decent. If you wanna see some examples, lemme know and I'll see what I can dig up

I recommend the Nikon D80 or equivalent as minimum requirements. If you can shell out some dough for the D200, you'd have a very very nice camera.

I have found a site (http://www.smartratings.com/photography/digital_cameras) that might be helpful in you making a choice as to which one is to go. It has reviews, expert and user, that are compiled for every product that is on the list. I think it's good to check them all. Hope this helps.

old thread but I went with the S3 IS... I think it's great and has a lot more control than my old s500... I just started shooting with it yesterday so no great/good shots yet, but I'm learning little by little... now I even know what aperture means
