So just in the news in recent days is that Bush's budget for Fiscal Year 2008 which begins next month will have a deficit of 482 Billion dollars, an all time record. The GOP always says the Democrats are "tax & spend" but at least one offsets the other; the GOP is "cut taxes and spend even more" which is how you get deficits.

this was a bipartisan effort, of course. democrats were big on pushing the housing bailout through - i think that is going to be even worse. and how many were critical of fannie and freddie bailout? i actually think that was probably politically inevitable, but there should have been cries of outrage anyway. i don't think most of the dems even know what that really means.

You might also be interested in a film called "Battle in Seattle" which is a dramatization (not documentary) about the protests and rioting that accompanied the WTO meetings in Seattle in 1999. (Remember the people dressed as turtles?) World trade and our status as a debtor nation being closely related.

thanks i'll make a note of it. i think the free trade protestors come in 2 forms, people who are nuts and people who have legitimate concerns about it screwing people. IMF and WTO do not seem there to exactly help everyone. more like help everyone to become servants to the US heh.

Sorry for short notice but I just happened to see this listed:

"I.O.U.S.A!" is going to screen Monday night February 9 at 7:30 PM at the Tivoli Theatre in Downers Grove, IL. There will be a discussion with writer/director Patricik Creadon. Admission is $9, $5 if you are a member of the sponsoring group, the After Hours Film Society. The theatre is in downtown Downers near the train station.

I wasn't planning on going since I have seen the film but I'll bet the discussion will be very interesting considering the amount of debt being taken on with the bailout and so forth. If anyone goes please post about it.
