need some help

I have a 1982 toyota 4x4 truck with a 22r motor it smokes but not all the time when i start it it does not but when i gas on it, it does after a little bit it stops same when going down the road I bought the truck from my brother he said he had a friend rebuild it but not the head but I'm not sure that is the probelm I'm wondering if it could be the rings or some thing else it has the power it sould have beening rebuilt it does not knock or rattle or run hot i'm planning the do the work my self never done a toyota but done plenty of chev 350s any tips you could give would be very much appreciated thank you

Have someone follow you and find out what the smoke smells like. Burnt oil means the rings aren't doing their job, kinda sweet smelling the head gasket is leaking.
